GreenWishing in SF: Greenzu.com Cooks up an Eco-Biz Caldron! by Willi Paul

The greenzu ad in jobs.jsninja.com ends with this note: “the current Greenzu is not reflective of the front-end project we need help with. In other words, you will not be working with Joomla or any other CMS.”

Somewhere in pre-launch, midst the broken images and eegad spelling errors, greebzu.com currently hosts a world of groovy information for both service providers and users of business sustainability tools and practices.

Content on forming green teams, green office strategies including pertinent questions:

  • Are there possibilities for waste reduction?
  • Could we achieve some early successes to raise enthusiasm about the program?
  • Are there opportunities to address health and safety issues?
  • Do we need support from the property manager? Will multiple tenants see a benefit?

Waste (source) reduction is covered. Ideas?

  • Cancel multiple subscriptions when one copy can be shared.
  • Stop junk mail.
  • Reduce or eliminate phonebooks.
  • Print documents double sided and only print e-mails when necessary.
  • Print in gray scale (monochrome).

The beta site also includes a handy side bar featuring articles on LEDs, green hotel projects and green radio, and composting. Greenzu.com recommends checking out the following:

  • BluePlanetSMART has created a trendy looking compost contraption that increases the decomposition rate and easily rotates for aeration…meaning more soil faster and all in a stylish container.
  • Happy Farmer Kitchen Composter is a complete composting system perfect for indoor use. Simply put your food waste in, cover daily with Bokashi compost starter and the system does the rest; this process prepares the scraps for burial in less than half the time of conventional composting methods without any unpleasant odors.
  • NatureMill is a fully independent electronic composting machine! The onboard computer controls the mixing and airflow, creating nutrient rich compost every two weeks, with no odor. This electronic composter runs a bit more expensive than other composting methods, but it’s perfect for that busy office that is looking to set-it-and-forget-it.

A green Google? Yahoo green? Natural Logic? Naaa… not just yet. But they are a big bang beta for pre-greenies looking to make a little Earthly leap!

Just in from Mr. Conrad (email, 12/15):

"Hi Willi -

I just came across your article. Damn - you are fast!!! You found our site before Google could even index it.

Thanks for motivating us to fix the spelling mistakes and add the other polish. We didn't think anyone was looking yet. What you see is just the tip of the iceberg. We've been doing green business consulting for a while, so we have a mountain of information that green teams could use to be more effective. It's taken us a while to figure out what to do with it, and greenzu is what we came up with. When done it will host all sorts of calculators, checklists, how to articles, and honest case studies about what works and *what doesn't work* in the real world.

Our team is mainly environmental engineers so we're new too the web world. You ended your article saying we need "an online community to compete with Waste Management’s http://greenopolis.com/." We completely agree. Any suggestions on how we do that? (After we finish polishing up the site, of course.)"
