“A Good Future Day”: DailyActs.org Shines a Waterwise Garden in Petaluma, CA - by Willi Paul
Wow, what a nice bunch of green peeps! It’s a rare day indeed when I’m outside of my computer brain to trim, rake and mulch in the soil but I thoroughly enjoyed practicing the DailyActs.org meditation yesterday at the Cavanaugh Community Center in Petaluma. A large bunch of folks showed up to revitalize and spring-tune a City permaculture demo project.
One facilitator, Erik Ohlsen of Permaculture Artisans, described the following site characteristics of the “L shape”, 3000 sq ft stretch of former lawn, now called a waterwise garden:
- Storm water harvesting
- Contour swales and earthen basins
- Catch storm water from roof
- Food forest - edible plants, fruit trees, temperate guavas, currents, insectory plants
- Fruit trees in the future
DailyActs.org Director Trathen Heckman said:
“It’s easy to get overwhelmed by the scale of the problems we face. Simple mindful daily actions that are done with a clear calm mind and clear heart are how we can come up with the best solutions. We are tuning into nature wisdom and how nature functions. Daily Acts are rooted in the power of natural systems.”
“The Cavanaugh Recreation Center landscape mimics a forest ecosystem and facilitates:
- Reduction in water use by 80%
- Passive water retention
- Increased habitat
- Carbon reduction
- Food production
- Community building
- Saving the City money!”
