The Forest Grail

The 42" diameter thin metal bowl was made in Santa Barbara by a local artisan and shipped by train to my Grandpa's office near Glen Blair, CA in the late 1890's. Back then, it seemed that everyone considered themselves above the law who collectively, and eventually, perished from the black ethics in a quick buck.

Glen Blair, CA is an unincorporated community in Mendocino County, California. The town is gone to the point that you cannot even get there unless you know your way down the logging roads and have the keys to the gates. The valleys behind the mill that the Glen Blair mill logged were reputed to hold the finest redwoods on the coast. One old local told a club member that any tree less than three feet in diameter was considered too small to log. The mill became part of Union Lumber Company in 1891 and finally closed in 1928.

Each October we trek with family and friends to the Forest Grail, a harvest ritual that includes berry picking and IPA's around a camp fire. Glow in the dark old growth prayers and tales of Earth First! ring-out with campy old owls jumping on the branches above.
