Regression, according to psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud, is a defense mechanism leading to the temporary or long-term reversion of the ego to an earlier stage of development rather than handling unacceptable impulses in a more adult way.

Frozen -

Many of us are frozen with fear with the rampant gun violence in our schools and neighborhoods. Three keys to any solution to gun violence might include:

1. Virtual Reality (VR) gear and games
2. Community safety is the overarching end goal
3. The National Rifle Association (NRA) community is an active participant

The Focus on VR -

In order to experience virtual reality, the user needs a specific set of hardware. The most important device that helps the user immerse in the virtual environment is probably the head-mounted display (HMD) - a wraparound headset which does not allow light or images from the real world to interfere with the virtual one. The installed base of virtual reality headsets was estimated at around seven million in 2016 and is forecast to grow to 37 million by 2020.

The VR industry is growing at a fast pace, with revenues from virtual reality hardware and software projected to increase from 3.7 billion U.S. dollars in 2016 to more than 40 billion U.S. dollars by 2020. Another forecast projects revenue from the global virtual reality market to reach 21.5 billion U.S. dollars in 2020.

As adults, as a society, we are not committed to reducing gun violence so a regression model is proposed to help change our gun lust and violent behavior. VR is seen as a key first experience and catalyst to the de-escalate the addiction to violence and the paranoia of self-protection in so many households.

Treatment Model: Reducing Killing - Elevating Play -

The following model treats violence in stages like the AA program. The Community portion stresses hands-on activities for small group therapy.

Stage I. Military:

War (killing) >

Stage II. Law Enforcement:

Fire Arms (killing) >
Tasers (stunning) >

Stage III. Community:

Trophy Hunting (legalized animal killing) >
Pro Football (sanctioned injuries) >
VR Games (computer simulated combat) >
Paint Ball (live play combat) >
Fishing (catch and release) >
Nature Photography (recording)

The model promotes gun violence awareness and teaches play and cooperation, reducing violence as entertainment, as we stop shooting up nature and collecting animal trophies. The NRA can work with their members to encourage the use of VR games as an alternative - or step down - to gun violence.

Final Thoughts -

In general, our kids are already sensitized to high tech tools and high-tech games; re-tooling behavior is now seen as possible starting with this age group.

Reducing aggression is key to reducing violence and is possible with VR Games & Paint Ball.

Change the story - change the gear - change the environment and change values to elevate peace and the community good.

The Police can promote this model by exchanging guns for VR systems and software.

Sell VR systems and games at gun shops and gun shows.
